The Context — The History
The story is set during the judges period when famine drove Elimelek's family from Bethlehem to Moab. Moabites were often enemies of Israel, making Ruth's loyalty a crossing of ethnic and religious boundaries.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After Naomi's husband and sons died, she urged her Moabite daughters-in-law to return home. Orpah left, but Ruth clung to Naomi with a vow of devotion that embraced Israel's God and people.
