The Context — The History
Isaiah 53 describes the suffering servant in post-exilic hope, read by early Christians as pointing to Christ. Substitutionary suffering was a startling idea amid cultures that often linked suffering only with personal guilt.

The servant is despised and afflicted yet bears others' sins willingly. Piercing and crushing language anticipates violent death that achieves peace and healing for many who went astray.
