The Context — The History
Obadiah's short prophecy condemns Edom for betraying Judah when Babylon attacked Jerusalem. Edomites descended from Esau and lived in rugged territory south of Judah, often hostile in crisis.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
The oracle against Edom recounts gloating over Jerusalem's fall and capturing fugitives at mountain passes. God judges those who exploit neighbors' disaster rather than show mercy.
