The Context — The History
Mark's Gospel closes with the risen Jesus commissioning frightened disciples in Galilee. Written for Roman believers facing persecution, Mark emphasizes urgent witness and the cost of following Christ in a empire that demanded Caesar's lordship.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After reports of the empty tomb and appearances, the longer ending of Mark records Jesus rebuking unbelief and hard hearts. He then sends the eleven to proclaim the gospel with signs accompanying those who believe.
