The Context — The History
Abraham's test on Mount Moriah took place in the hill country of what later became Jerusalem, a region central to Israel's worship. Child sacrifice was practiced by some neighboring peoples, but God stopped Abraham and provided a ram instead, foreshadowing substitutionary provision.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
God commanded Abraham to offer Isaac, the son of promise. Abraham obeyed, trusting God could raise the dead. At the last moment the angel stopped him, and Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket. He named the place The Lord Will Provide in worshipful recognition.

Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
