The Context — The History
Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt during a period when Semitic peoples sometimes rose in foreign households. Though far from home and betrayed by brothers, God's presence with Joseph shows that covenant faithfulness is not limited by geography or status.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Joseph's brothers hated him, threw him into a pit, and sold him to Ishmaelite traders. In Egypt, Potiphar bought him. Instead of disappearing into anonymous slavery, Joseph prospered because the Lord was with him and gave success in everything he did.

Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.
