The Context — The History
Samuel led Israel as judge and prophet during the transition toward monarchy. At Gilgal he called the nation to renew loyalty to God after Saul's kingship was established, reminding them that political change must not replace wholehearted service to the Lord.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Samuel defended his integrity before Israel, recounting years of righteous leadership. Though they had asked for a king, he urged them not to turn aside after worthless idols. True security lay in fearing the Lord, serving faithfully, and remembering God's great deeds.
