The Context — The History
Psalm 55 is a lament where David grieves betrayal by a close companion. In a culture where covenant loyalty was sacred, treachery from a friend felt unbearable. The psalm moves from anguish toward trust that God will bear the burden and uphold the righteous.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
David cries out evening, morning, and noon, overwhelmed by violence and deceit. He wishes he could flee like a dove. Yet he commands himself to cast cares on the Lord, confident that God will sustain and never allow the righteous to be moved.
