The Context — The History
Hosea prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel before its fall to Assyria in 722 BC. God commanded Hosea to marry an unfaithful wife as a living picture of Israel's spiritual adultery.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 2 uses marriage imagery to describe Israel chasing other gods. God declares He will hedge her path with thorns and wall her in, blocking access to false lovers so she might return.
