The Context — The History
Nahum prophesied against Nineveh about a century after Jonah. Assyria had oppressed many nations, including Israel and Judah. Nahum announces that the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 1 opens with an acrostic poem celebrating God's power over nature and nations. In the midst of descriptions of judgment, Nahum declares that the Lord is good — a refuge for those who trust Him in trouble.
