The Context — The History
Paul had been a zealous Pharisee who counted pedigree, law-keeping, and zeal as gain. In Philippians 3 he revalues everything in light of knowing Christ.

Paul listed former credentials as loss compared to knowing Christ. He pressed on, not considering himself yet perfected, straining toward the heavenly goal for which God called him in Christ Jesus.
