The Context — The History
Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council, during a private nighttime conversation in Jerusalem. First-century Judea was under Roman occupation, and religious leaders were divided over how to respond to Jesus' growing influence.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
John 3 opens with Nicodemus acknowledging that Jesus is a teacher sent from God. Jesus immediately redirects the conversation toward the necessity of spiritual rebirth — being born again of water and Spirit — before revealing the depth of God's love for the world.
