The Context — The History
Jesus teaches in the temple during the Feast of Tabernacles when giant lamps illuminated the courts. He claims to fulfill the festival's light imagery as the one who dispels moral and spiritual darkness.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After forgiving a woman caught in adultery, Jesus resumes teaching. Pharisees challenge his testimony, but he declares himself the light guiding those who follow him out of darkness.
