The Context — The History
At Lazarus's tomb near Bethany, Jesus faces grief two miles from Jerusalem where authorities plot his death. John's Gospel presents Jesus as fully divine yet deeply human in compassion.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Martha and Mary mourn their brother four days dead. Jesus is deeply moved by their sorrow and the pain of death itself, weeping before commanding Lazarus to come out.
