The Context — The History
Deuteronomy 18 regulates prophets, priests, and forbidden occult practices. Israel was not to seek guidance like the nations through divination. Instead, God would raise a prophet like Moses, and his people were called to integrity before the Lord alone.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After forbidding child sacrifice, sorcery, and spiritists, Moses contrasted pagan inquiry with the prophet God would provide. The chapter's ethical climax is simple and sweeping: Israel must be blameless before the Lord their God, depending on his word not forbidden arts.
