The Context — The History
Elijah and Elisha ministered during divided loyalty in Israel, when Baal worship threatened covenant life. Elijah's departure marked a transition of prophetic responsibility, witnessed by sons of the prophets and sealed by a miraculous ascent.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Elisha refused to leave Elijah as they traveled from Gilgal to the Jordan. Elijah struck the water with his cloak and it divided. As they walked and talked, a fiery chariot separated them and Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind, leaving his mantle to Elisha.
