The Context — The History
Esther takes place in the Persian court of Xerxes, where Jewish exiles lived under imperial law. Haman's genocidal decree against Jews was legal yet wicked; Mordecai and Esther needed royal authority to issue a counter-decree protecting their people.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After Haman's plot was exposed and he was executed, danger remained because the first edict could not be canceled. The king gave Esther and Mordecai authority to write new decrees sealed with his ring, allowing Jews to defend themselves on the appointed day.
