The Context — The History
Isaiah's Servant Songs address Israel's mission after exile. God's servant—often identified with the nation and later with the Messiah—was appointed not only to regather Jacob but to bring God's salvation to Gentiles, expanding covenant hope to the whole world.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Isaiah 49 opens with the servant's call from the womb and apparent failure. Yet God honors the servant and declares restoring Israel is too small a task; the servant will also be light for nations so salvation reaches earth's ends.
