The Context — The History
Lamentations was likely written after Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC. The book gives voice to grief over exile, famine, and the loss of temple and city — the center of Israel's identity.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 1 personifies Jerusalem as a widow, abandoned and afflicted. The poet describes her isolation among the nations and the relentless pursuit of enemies who overtook Judah in her hour of distress.
