The Context — The History
Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa called to prophesy against Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II (8th century BC). The northern kingdom enjoyed wealth while crushing the poor and perverting justice.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 5 opens with a funeral lament over Israel. God rejects their festivals and offerings because they trample the needy. He calls them to let justice roll like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream.
