The Context — The History
Paul later cites this verse to explain justification by faith (Romans 4). In Abram's world, covenant loyalty often meant ritual and lineage; here God counts trust as right standing before him.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
God reaffirms his promise of countless descendants though Abram and Sarai remain childless and aged. Abram looks at the stars and believes God's word, and God reckons that faith as righteousness.
