The Context — The History
Jacob fled Canaan after deceiving his brother Esau, traveling toward Haran along ancient trade routes. Stone pillars and night visions were common ways people marked divine encounters in the patriarchal era.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching heaven with angels ascending and descending. God repeats the promises given to Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob awakens to declare the place awesome—the house of God.
