The Context — The History
Joshua assumed command after Moses' death, at a moment when Israel's future hung on crossing into hostile territory. Eastern Jordan was secured, but the main campaign lay west among entrenched peoples.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Joshua 1 opens with God commissioning Joshua to lead Israel into the land promised to the fathers. Three times courage is commanded, grounded each time in God's presence and the unbroken word of Scripture.
